The God of healing is Dhanvantari. He is also referred to as the divine doctor, the physician of the Gods. He is regarded as a manifestation of the God of protection and nourishment, Lord Vishnu. He is also credited for developing the traditional medical system known as Ayurveda and donating it to humanity. As a result, he is thankfully remembered as the Ayurvedic God.

Dhanvantri’s Portrait

Dhanvantari is shown as having a powerful body, an attractive countenance, a relatively dark complexion, and dressing in yellow. He has four arms, and one of them is occupied with a pot holding the priceless Amrut, the life-giving fluid. He is holding a leech, a blood-sucking bug that is said to have been a key component of the prehistoric medical systems. In some of the representations, he is also shown as a form of Lord Vishnu, bearing the scriptures in addition to his normal conch and discus.

The Dhanvantri Legend

When the ocean of milk was being churned by demons and heavenly beings to get Amrut, the nectar of immortality, Dhanvantari was created from it. The priceless and much sought-after elixir of life was finally revealed by Lord Dhanvantari after many other rare items. He was carrying a pitcher in his hand. When Lord Vishnu assumed the appearance of the alluring Mohini, he refused to give the liquid to the demons and gave it exclusively to the celestials, for the sake of the cosmos. The Amrut was intended to be shared by both the Devas and the Asuras.

The vast churning of the ocean and the appearance of Dhanvantari have spiritual significance as well since they are thought to represent the soul rising above all the vices that plague a life on earth to achieve self-realization.

People generally worship Dhanvantari on that day for their wonderful health and long life since it is believed that he manifested on the day of Dhanteras, which happens a few days before Diwali, the festival of lights. It should be mentioned that Goddess Lakshmi also emerged from the water at the same moment.
